Half Formed Things are a special group, dear to the hearts of Karen and me, and it seems a growing number of others too from the great level of warmth and appreciation in a packed ballroom! This time back to a 3 piece following Nici’s return to Oz, but they seem just as good as ever this way helped by fine sound and light show.
They also keep evolving and improving with a number of new songs. Those performed solo by Matthew and Morgan were very good, but it’s when they sing together that the magic happens most … a spectacular mix of beautiful voices and music with outstanding drumming from Stewart. Go see them asap! AND the gig raised a lot of money for the Australian bush fire emergency.Β Please help them raise more by buying their album or donatingΒ … see – https://www.facebook.com/halfformedthings/

The show started with a set from Bonny Light Horseman led by AnaΓ―s, Eric D. Johnson (from the band Fruit Bats) and multi-instrumentalist Josh Kaufman. I haven’t really been impressed by the re-vamped old folk songs on their album (a bit dull for my taste), but it’s a more enjoyable experience live, particularly the guitar playing of Josh which is superb … a revelation in fact! I must check him out more.
After the interval AnaΓ―s took centre stage for her own material which is what I really love and the band gave added variety to songs I’d heard her sing so often. I still prefer her solo though which she did for a few songs. What I really, really want though is more new original songs from her once she get this Hadestown and BLH stuff out of the way!

Thanks to host Phil Ramsay and all those who came along on the night. First gig for ages and we had great fun at a really nice venue.
2019 has been a pretty good year for me in general (if you can ignore the dire politics and planet destruction). Esp. a great year for music, itβs been a lot of fun for me and lots of good times with friends. I counted 66 gigs, Including playing with The Postcards, and The Big Light, discovered some great new music and I also started to get back into recording too (more next year).
Best Gigs β
A very close run decision since I had so many outstanding ones, but my Gig of the Year award has to go to Kagoule at Broadcast in February β¦ Perfect set, perfectly played β¦ a superb performance all round from one of my favourite bands.
Impossible to choose a top 5 though, since I was so lucky to witness some other really special gigs, the best of which included Penelope Isles, black midi, BjΓΆrk, Snarky Puppy, Shame, Pom Poko, Lewsberg, Jarv IS, Anais Mitchell, Suede, Donny McCaslin, Man Of Moon and the amazing musical Hadestown. Best Albums β
Still eagerly awaiting the new Man Of Moon album to top next year’s 2020 list! But this year my new faves were (with Spotify links) –

Always lots of great new music out there if you care to look! Blown away this year by –
I hope 2020 is a happy and safe year for all of us. Live Long And Prosper!
One of the best Smith’s tribute bands around and we love to sing along to all of the songs that saved our lives.

We had an absolute blast at Ewanβs 50th birthday party. If you want us for a private party or a fundraiser you know where to find us. Reasonable rates for the former and nothing for the latter. We reckon there are more audience pics to come but meanwhile hereβs the band in full effect and our Neil getting so excited he joins the dancers while still singing. Thanks to Aldona for booking us and for the lovely recommendation on our page.
