The Postcards – Stereo, Glasgow – 26 April 2025

We had a blast playing at Stereo on Saturday – our favourite Glasgow venue. Thanks to all the folk that came down (200 of you!) that helped to raise close on £2k for Beatson Cancer Charity .Tonight’s set featured an Impromptu “Ziggy Stardust” as a birthday gift from the band to our Neil. Thanks also to Trash Tapes and Riverside Ghosts for their excellent support sets.

I had wanted to see the amazing Icelandic jazz quarter ADHD for many years. They tour mainly in Europe, not UK … so a few days in Berlin seemed like a great idea! So glad I travelled through to see the Glasgow film festival showing of Emiliana’s lovely film ‘The Extraordinary Miss Flower’. It is a great peice of cinema with a fabulous story including the music from her new album of the same title. Thomas Dolby – Saint Luke’s, Glasgow – 14 Aug 2024

Been a big fan of TDs music since early 80s when bought first albums and saw the ‘Flat Earth’ tour show at the Queen’s Hall in 84. He had mainly retired, but saw him again in 2011. Another gap, but back touring again! Great support from the very entertaining Martin McAloon bravely playing (and largely pulling off) solo his brother Paddy’s masterpiece Prefab Sprout compositions. Enjoyed that. Now a professor at Baltimore University, he used elements of his music technology teaching in the show to great effect, live streaming his DAW and merging in video in clever ways … impressed!…

Girl Scout – Sneaky Pete’s, Edinburgh – 22 May 2024

I enjoyed the few songs I had seen and heard from Sweden’s Girl Scout, so was intrigued enough to head out to Sneaky’s for this one. From Dutch support band Marathon and Girls Scout combined use of massed Fender offset guitars (6) I could tell this was maximum indie music night! Cardiacs Family – Brudenell Social Club, Leeds – 5 May 2024

It took news of the tragic and untimely death of composer and band leader Tim Smith in 2020 for me to discover the amazing and to some people bizarre music of Cardiacs. I try to never miss one of my favourite bands when they come to Scotland so Glasgow it was in the lovely St Luke’s. 2 Swedish bands with Gothy, Post-Punk styling .. Then Comes Silence with guitars but first up Agent Side Grinder with synths. Not been to Cabaret Voltaire for many years. I think everyone should experience the boundless energy and enthusiasm of Amyl & The Sniffers at least once! This show was originally billed as Tony Fox Sales and friends touring  the classic Iggy Pop album ’Lust For Life’ on it’s 45 years anniversary.  Tony and brother Hunt Sales played on the album. The Postcards – The Counting House, Edinburgh – 18 Feb 2023

Our first performance of 2023 on Saturday night saw us play an extra special show for ‘Pretty In Pink’ Donna’s birthday. Such a lovely crowd and Donna got to play air guitar for the encore. Dry Cleaning – Barrowlands, Glasgow – 17 Feb 2023

My third time seeing Dry Cleaning and one of my favourite bands just get better and better. I’ve not listened to new album ‘Stumpwork’ that much yet, but it’s growing on me and the wonderful ‘Gary Ashby’ might have been my top song of 2022! Young Fathers – La Belle Angele, Edinburgh – 10 Feb 2023

Young Fathers are a significant force in modern music and I’m really proud of the international impact of three guys from Edinburgh. But I have always manged to just miss going to see them, ’til now. Pale Blue Eyes – Sneaky Pete’s, Edinburgh – 8 Feb 2023

What a great night, gig of the year contender already! Just an amazing bill of cool bands. A sold out crowd got there especially early to catch young Edinburgh band No Windows who were very good and a name to watch out for. We had no expectations about next act Hector Gannet, but as soon as they started everyone commented how they were blown away by the tremendous sound so we could clearly hear such interesting songs played brilliantly. The Musical Box – Usher Hall, Edinburgh – 3 Feb 2023

I know it’s a tribute act, but Andy and I had to go and see them play just about our favourite ever album, all 4 sides of ‘The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway’ by Genesis from 1975. I really enjoyed the whole experience. The Musical Box have been re-creating Genesis for nearly 30 years (not with the same line up) and have made a succesful career out of it. A quirky but interesting band are The Cool Greenhouse. A key element is the witty spoken poetry lyrics of front-man Tom Greenhouse. Unfortunately the sound wasn’t good enough to enable me to hear many of those nice words which I thought defeated much of the pupose and pissed me off! Anaïs Mitchell – Newcastle University – 13 Nov 2022

I’d been waiting many years for a new original songs album from Anaïs and though her recent eponymous release is nice, I don’t think it reaches the heights of her incredible earlier works. Still, live is a different prospect, and with a solid band joining her, so it transpired. Such a beautiful singer, guitarist and person, always gracious and endearing. This was a very special occasion for me and all involved. This was the first time Kirsty Baird and Annette Hanley had presented a show designed to showcase songs featuring both the Hanley & The Baird band and also the amazing Sing In The City Aw Blacks choir (about 50/50). Richard Jobson is the only original member on show of the Skids and his support band The Armoury Show. But the bands are great and he carries it off perfectly with great energy, passion and humour. James Yorkston – Summerhall, Edinburgh – 19 Aug 2022

I’ve enjoyed a bit of James music but not followed closely until I noticed this show with a stellar band including Phil Selway from Radiohead and especially Nina Persson from The Cardigans … just had to go, and very glad I did!
