Yak are new to me but have been around a few years … evidenced by their energetic but very tight performance of their noisy songs. Lots of variety for a 3 piece among the big, big riffs. Impressive!

Wow! I love Devo, and being only a simple Spud Boy I wondered whether a tribute band could do justice to their wonderful quirky music and performance. I needn’t have worried. We Are Not Devo are tremendous. Not just musically and visually but in the spirit of the way they go about it all, costume changes and all … great! The set being a bit too long was a minor quibble but we will definitely go and see them again if we get the chance.

I first came across Screaming Females through their awesome cover of Taylor Swift’s ‘Shake It Off’ then discovered they have been around a while with a great catalogue of albums. Marissa is one special performer with a unique  and powerful voice as well as guitar shredding super powers. We were not disappointed! I bought a CD from Marissa before the show and she couldn’t understand a word I said (all perfectly normal English), her friend had to translate! Go and see if you can!

I love the massive noise and the whole sweaty, explosive experience of Lightning Bolt and was lucky enough to get a ticket for such a small venue that sold out in minutes! And I was brave or foolish enough to work my way to the front of the stage, right in front of Brian Gibson’s massive bass rig and in touching distance of Brian Chippendale’s drums. When the mayhem duly ensued I manfully managed to stick around through the moshing to see my heroes in close up action.

Never disappointed with their sound and energy. The crowd went mad of course and it was my energy that gave up first and after 10 ‘songs’ or so I beat a safe retreat. Lightning Bolt is definitely a ‘participant’ rather than ‘spectator’ sport, so after I had had some more I left a little early, seen enough, bruised but unbowed and ears just about intact!

Having seen John and the band so many times I stopped writing reviews. But this special occasion at the magnificent Merchant’s Hall deserves one! Firstly, what a great venue, historic and grand architecture and artwork, cabaret tables, table service … very classy. But the band were on top form with a great sound, 2 great sets with all the songs we wanted so Karen could sing and dance her heart out. A very special occasion. Bravo, and ‘Love On Ya!’
